Meteorology Warns: Heavy Snow, Ice, and Strong Winds Across Turkey

The Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) has issued nationwide weather warnings for Thursday, January 1, 2026. Much of the country is expected to experience unsettled conditions, including widespread precipitation, strong winds along coastal areas, and hazardous winter weather inland.

According to the latest forecasts, temperatures will remain below seasonal averages, increasing the risk of transportation disruptions, power outages, and dangerous outdoor conditions.

Heavy Snowfall and Winter Hazards in Inland and Eastern Regions

Rain is expected along the Mediterranean coastline, while most other parts of the country will see snow or mixed rain and snow. Meteorologists warn that snowfall will be heavy and locally intense in several regions, particularly in eastern and interior areas.

Significant snowfall is forecast for parts of the Eastern Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia, and Southeastern Anatolia, with local accumulations expected to be strong enough to disrupt daily life. Ice formation and frost are also likely, especially during night and early morning hours.

In mountainous areas of Eastern Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia, authorities are urging caution due to an elevated avalanche risk, especially on steep slopes with deep snow cover.

Strong Winds and Stormy Conditions Along the Coasts

Coastal regions will not escape the impact of the system. Winds are expected to strengthen significantly, with gusts reaching 40–60 km/h, particularly along the Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean, and Central Black Sea coasts.

These conditions may cause disruptions to sea transportation and pose risks to outdoor activities, especially near open coastal areas.

Istanbul: Snow Mixed with Rain and Strong Northern Winds

In Istanbul, the day is expected to be partly to mostly cloudy, with intermittent snow mixed with rain, especially during the morning and midday hours in northern and eastern districts.

Temperatures will hover around 3°C, and strong northerly winds may make it feel significantly colder. Drivers are advised to be alert for slippery roads, particularly during early hours.

Muğla: Windy but Relatively Mild

Muğla will experience partly cloudy skies and relatively milder conditions compared to much of the country. While no significant precipitation is expected, strong northerly winds along the coast may reach storm strength at times.

With temperatures around 4°C, outdoor plans should account for gusty winds, especially in coastal and open areas.

Antalya: Rain on the Coast, Snow in the Highlands

In Antalya, skies will be partly to mostly cloudy, with rain and showers affecting coastal areas earlier in the day. Inland and higher elevations may see snow or sleet, particularly during morning hours.

Daytime temperatures will reach around 12°C, but strong northwesterly winds may create cooler and unsettled conditions, especially along the shoreline.

Meteorology officials advise residents across the country to remain cautious, especially in regions affected by heavy snow, icing, strong winds, and avalanche risk. Travelers are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and take necessary precautions before heading out.
