MINES IN BLACK SEA ODESSA

Mines laid off Odessa broke their chains due to weather conditions and began to drift in the Black Sea. Retired Admiral Deniz Kutluk said there was a possibility that stray mines would reach the Bosphorus of Istanbul,

The offensive launched by Russia on Ukraine on February 24 began to make the western Black Sea waters increasingly dangerous for merchant ships. During the outbreak of the war, it was reported that some of the hundreds of naval mines laid in the Odessa Bay region of Ukraine were dislodged and dragged southwards.

Experts suggest that stray mines can reach as far as the Bosphorus with the current created by the Danube River. Finally, Retired Rear Admiral Deniz Kutluk, who made statements on NTV, said, “The coast guard needs to take measures.”

Kutluk said following:

“Even if 420 mines have dislodged by 5 percent, we are still talking about a 20 mine. We can’t say there’s no risk, there’s a risk. The coast guard needs to take precautions.”

‘UPSTREAM’ WARNING: THEY MAY COME AS FAR AS ISTANBUL

Kutluk, noting the danger that the upper currents could carry the mines as far as Istanbul, used the following statements:

“As you know, there is an upper stream from the Black Sea that opens into the Aegean through the Turkish Straits. With this current, they can drift and head for the Bosphorus. It’s easy to take precautions when it hits the beach. After all, an extermination team goes, destroys it. But if it enters the traffic of the Bosphorus, it is not clear who it will hit. It seems that there is a situation that requires precautions in this regard”

“DEPENDING ON THE SIZE, THE DANGER ALSO BECOMES DIFFERENT”

Kutluk stressed that depending on the size of the mines, the danger it would create would also be different, “When it is large, it may sink ships. But if it is small, it will lead to damage to some compartments. We have high-tech aircraft. Air surveillance can be carried out for 1-2 weeks until this danger becomes clear, it is over. Thermal camera surveillance can be done.
