Ministry of Environment steps back regarding issue of “death ship” from Brazil

The Brazilian nuclear aircraft carrier Nae Sao Paulo, called the “death ship” by experts due to the amount of asbestos it contains, will not be allowed into Turkey for dismantling. The nuclear aircraft carrier Nae Sao Paulo, described as the “death ship”, was widely criticized for being brought to Turkey for dismantling. After the reactions, the ministry has taken a step back.

“THE SHIP WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER TURKISH TERRITORIAL WATERS”

In brief, the Minister shared following regarding the issue:

“At this point, the ship will not be allowed into Turkish territorial waters due to following main reasons: A second audit process to be realized under inspection of our audit teams was not carried out although it is included in the notification requirement. “Hazardous Substance Inventory” Report to be submitted to our ministry, was not provided.

Accordingly it has been decided to cancel the conditional approval given for the ship. In accordance with this decision, the ship will not be allowed to enter Turkish territorial waters.”
