Museums and Archaeological Sites in Turkey Generates 9.4 Billion Lira in Five Years

Revenue from visits to museums and archaeological sites under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has exceeded 9.4 billion lira between 2020 and 2024.
The sector has been boosted by the opening of new museums across different provinces, the widespread use of the “Museum Card” system, technological innovations, the introduction of night-time museum experiences, and the return of historical artifacts previously smuggled abroad. As a result, interest in museums and archaeological sites in Turkey has been rising year after year.
According to data compiled from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the number of museums in the country reached 636 last year, while total visitors to museums and archaeological sites hit 61.6 million.
Revenue Growth After the Pandemic
The income from paid visits to museums and archaeological sites grew steadily in parallel with the increase in museum numbers and visitor traffic, surpassing 9 billion lira in just five years.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, revenues from museum visits fell sharply compared to previous years. In 2019, revenues were calculated at 744 million lira, but with travel restrictions in place, this figure dropped to 169 million lira in 2020.
Although 2021 showed some recovery with 362 million lira, it was still below pre-pandemic levels. The rebound came in 2022, when revenues rose to 1.07 billion lira, and in 2023 they reached 2.66 billion lira. Last year, the figure soared to 5.15 billion lira.
Altogether, revenues from 2020 to 2024 totaled 9.43 billion lira.
Museum Card Sales on the Rise
Sales of the Ministry’s “Museum Card” also saw a significant increase over the same period. In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, 758,509 cards were sold. By last year, this number had surged to nearly 6 million. Over the past five years, a total of 15.6 million Museum Cards were sold, underscoring the growing public interest in cultural heritage and museum tourism in Turkey.
