US media has raised new claims regarding Turkey’s preparations for a large-scale military operation in northern Syria. According to The Wall Street Journal, US officials have indicated that Turkey is preparing for a comprehensive operation in Syria, and this move has been met with “concern” by the US.

The report highlights increased activity by Turkish forces, including commandos and artillery units, in the Kobani region. One US official suggested that Turkey could soon launch a large-scale operation in northeastern Syria. This situation is said to resemble the days leading up to Turkey’s 2019 Operation Peace Spring.

Situation in Northeast Syria and Ilham Ahmed’s Warnings

Another important detail from US media coverage is the letter written by Ilham Ahmed, co-chair of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, to US President-elect Donald Trump. In the letter, Ahmed expressed concerns over Turkey’s military activities and warned that Turkey’s intention to take control in northeastern Syria could lead to catastrophic consequences.

This letter came to light after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Turkey. On December 12, 2024, Blinken arrived in Ankara to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to discuss developments in Syria. Following the meeting, the Turkish Presidency’s Directorate of Communications issued a statement in which President Erdoğan emphasized Turkey’s commitment to taking preventive measures against terrorist organizations, including PKK, PYD, YPG, and ISIS. He also reaffirmed Turkey’s determination to continue its fight against PKK’s Syrian extension, the YPG.

Turkey’s Policy Towards PKK and YPG

Turkey views the Syrian YPG (People’s Defense Units) as an extension of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party), and it has maintained a strong military stance against these groups. The PKK, founded in 1978 in Lice, Turkey, is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union, the United States, the UK, and France.

Turkey’s military operations in Syria and its efforts to combat Kurdish groups in the region are of critical importance for both regional security and international relations. The increasing military activity in northern Syria is being closely monitored by the US and other international actors. (Source:tele1.com.tr)
