New era in bus travel: Pet animals can be carried on buses in front of passenger’s seat

A new era in bus travel begins. According to the decision published in the Official Gazette, pet animals such as cats, dogs and birds with vaccination report cards can be carried on buses in front of the passenger’s lap or seat. Previously, live animals were not allowed to be carried by passengers inside the vehicle.

The new regulation of the Ministry of transport amending the Road Transport Regulation was published in the Official Gazette. The change paved the way for the transport of pets in vehicles (buses).

According to this, pet animals such as cats, dogs (except dangerous ones) and birds (Goldfinch, parakeet or Canary) may also be carried on the lap of the owner passenger or in front of the seat they sit in, in addition to the baggage-carrying section, provided their special cages are locked. In case of need special flights can be arranged where pets can be carried in the vehicle, without passengers. Those who do not comply with this rule will be given 2 warning penalties.

In the previous regulation, of pets such as cats, dogs and birds were carried in their cages in special sections for carrying luggage.

The new regulation changing the Road Transport Regulation was published by the Ministry of Transport on 10 January 2020.

The new version in Turkish is as follows:

MADDE 5 – Aynı Yönetmeliğin 38 inci maddesinin altıncı fıkrası aşağıdaki şekilde değiştirilmiştir.

“(6) Aşı karneli kedi, köpek (tehlike arz edenler hariç) ve kuş (saka, muhabbet kuşu veya kanarya) gibi evcil hayvanlar, özel kafesleri kilitli olmak şartıyla bagaj taşımaya mahsus bölümün dışında hayvan sahibi yolcunun kucağında veya oturduğu koltuğun önünde de taşınabilir. Gerekli hallerde, yolcu alınmaksızın evcil hayvanların taşıtın içinde taşınabileceği özel sefer düzenlenebilir. Bu fıkraya uymayan yetki belgesi sahiplerine 2 uyarma verilir.”
