Özel Gives Timeline for New Political Party
Speaking about ongoing political developments, Özel responded to questions about when a new political party could be officially announced.
He explained that several legal processes involving the Republican People’s Party are still ongoing and are expected to be resolved within the coming days or weeks before a final decision is made.
Legal Challenges Still Ongoing
According to Özel, the party is currently involved in several legal proceedings.
He said signatures submitted to call an extraordinary party congress had not been acted upon, leading to a court process. He also referred to a case before the Court of Cassation as well as an application submitted to the Chief Public Prosecutor of the Court of Cassation concerning the Party Assembly.
Özel stated that these legal matters are expected to be clarified within one to two weeks.
Leadership Will Decide the Next Step
Once the legal processes are completed, Özel said the party’s Central Executive Board will meet to determine the next course of action.
He added that consultations would also take place with elected provincial party leaders rather than appointed officials, as well as with members of the Party Assembly, before making any final decisions.
Preparations for a New Party Are Already Underway
Özel revealed that preparations are already progressing on several fronts.
He said one group has been working on establishing a completely new political party, while another has been exploring the possibility of keeping an existing political party ready as a precaution.
According to Özel, such a move would ensure that the political movement could participate in a snap election if one were to be called.
He added that work is currently underway on drafting the party’s constitution and political program, selecting founding members, and completing other organizational preparations.
Official Steps Expected Soon
Özel said that if the current legal processes proceed as expected, official steps toward establishing the new political party are likely to begin by the end of July or the beginning of August.
