NIPAH VIRUS IN INDIA

The Nipah virus, which has caused the death of 2 people in India, has put European countries on high alert as well. Scientists are concerned about the virus, which has no known treatment, mutating and rapidly spreading among humans.

The deaths of 2 people in the southern Indian state of Kerala, where the 4th Nipah outbreak has occurred since 2018, has raised significant concerns in many countries. Numerous schools have been closed in the country, and 9 villages have been declared quarantine zones.

First discovered in pig farms in Malaysia and Singapore in 1998, the Nipah virus has caused great concern due to the absence of a vaccine or proven treatment and its high mortality rates.

STARTS WITH MILD SYMPTOMS, PROGRESSES TO COMA

Scientists have warned that a highly dangerous variant of the virus, which has mutated through bats, could rapidly spread among humans, calling for increased precautions.

With a death rate of up to 70%, the virus typically presents symptoms similar to COVID-19 or a flu outbreak, including fever, difficulty breathing, nausea, headache, vomiting, and, in severe cases, coma.

The re-emergence of the virus in India, investigated by the World Health Organization, has raised concerns about a new mass outbreak. In the 1998 outbreak, more than 100 people lost their lives, while in 2001, 62 deaths occurred, and in the 2018 outbreak, 21 people died.

The recent outbreak in India has also caused concerns in Europe. The United Kingdom has announced that it is closely monitoring the virus and is on alert due to the possibility of the virus entering the country.
