Password-Free Contactless Payments Get a Higher Cap

The password-free transaction limit for contactless payments made via cards and mobile devices has been increased from 1,500 Turkish lira to 2,500 Turkish lira, effective 15 January. The update was officially communicated to banks by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK).

Contactless payments, which allow consumers to complete transactions without any physical contact using cards or mobile devices, have become increasingly common. With the latest adjustment, users will now be able to make higher-value purchases without entering a PIN.

Update Announced by the Banking Regulator

In its notice to banks, the BDDK stated that the password-free contactless payment limit—last raised to 1,500 lira on 1 July 2024—has been updated after a period of approximately one and a half years. As of 15 January, the new limit of 2,500 lira will apply nationwide.

How Turkey Compares with Europe and the US

Password-free limits for contactless payments are widely used across the world. In the UK, the limit is typically £100, while in many European countries—including France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Germany—the standard limit is €50.

In the United States, there is no uniform standard for contactless payment limits, and individual banks are free to set their own thresholds.
