Pier of a restaurant collapses at Bebek, Istanbul

At Bebek, a restaurant’s pier on which customers were dining at tables, collapsed into the sea. While those who fell into the sea were rescued, 4 injured were taken to the hospital.

The incident took place at Bebek, a prominent neighborhood in Istanbul. A large number of police, fire and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. While the necessary safety measures were taken in the environment, an investigation was initiated on the subject.

In a statement made by the Besiktas District Governor’s Office, it said “Today at 21.00 around the clock, 4 of our citizens were injured due to a balcony collapse in a restaurant on Bebek Arnavutkoy Street in our district. The injured were referred to the hospital by 112 Emergency Medical teams and it was understood that there was no danger to their lives in the initial information received. The necessary safety measures have been taken in the environment and an investigation has been initiated on the subject. It is announced to the public with respect.”

In the information shared from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) it said “The restaurant whose pier collapsed in Arnavutköy changed owner last October, and the new owners started renovating it. During the renovation works, a violation was detected in the building 2 times and the restaurant was sealed. Although it shared that the owner would eliminate the violation, the seal was broken and the violation continued.”
