President Erdogan signs decree to convert world famous Hagia Sophia into mosque

Turkish President Erdogan made an announcement on his Twitter account after the State Council’s decision. Erdogan, who signed the resolution opening Hagia Sophia for Muslims to use as a mosque wished “Good Luck”. Hagia Sophia’s status as a museum was abolished, paving the way for usage of Muslims as a mosque. Council of State 10th department cancelled the decision taken by the government in 1934, making Hagia Sophia a museum.

In the reason for the decision of the Council of state, it was noted that Hagia Sophia was the property of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Khan Foundation and was offered to the service of the community as a mosque.

Following was emphasized in the decision; “Hagia Sophia is the property of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Han Foundation which is a foundation with a private legal entity and whose status is maintained and secured by our legal order and it is presented to the service of the community for continuous use as a mosque as per the will of the founding person as an immovable property for the benefit of public. It is also registered as a mosque in the original deed

The first statement from President Erdogan came after the Supreme Court ruling. Sharing the decree on the transfer of Hagia Sophia to the presidency of Religious Affairs, Erdogan said, “Good Luck with it”.
