Record fine for ships polluting the sea in Mersin: 11 million 906 thousand Turkish liras

SEA POLLUTION IN MERSIN

Mersin Metropolitan Municipality imposed a fine of 11 million 906 thousand liras on 5 ships that it found to have left waste at sea last year. At the same time, the crews who carried out the inspections collected approximately 268 cubic meters of waste during their work cleaning the sea with ‘ebony’.

According to a statement from Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, “Environmental Protection and Control Department” teams carried out 226 inspections in the Eastern Mediterranean in 2021. As a result of the work done, the municipality fined 11 million 906 thousand Turkish liras to 5 ships that were found to have left waste at sea.

Within the scope of disposal works, 692 thousand 101 tons of domestic waste transported to transfer stations and were also used in electricity production.
