Russia Responds to Minister Hakan Fidan’s Comments on Syria

Following Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s statement that “it would be wrong to explain the events in Syria by any external intervention at this stage,” Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova responded, stating, “Without the provocation and extensive support from external powers, these groups would not have dared to take such bold actions.”

Zakharova argued that since November 27, the jihadist groups had engaged in conflicts with the Syrian army and “would not have dared to attack without external support and provocation.” She further stated, “There is no doubt that the terrorists, without the provocation and extensive support from external powers aiming to incite a new armed conflict in Syria, would not have dared to take such bold actions. It is clear that the radicals are trying to undermine efforts for sustainable peace by escalating violence and pose a significant security threat to civilians.”

What Did Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan Say?

In a press conference following his meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Ankara, Minister Hakan Fidan remarked, “It would be wrong at this stage to explain the events in Syria by any external intervention.” He added, “This is a refuge for those who do not want to understand the realities of Syria; it is a mistake. The Astana process had helped stop intense and heated conflicts on the ground. The goal was to advance the engagement of the regime with the opposition in the political arena. At this point, the reason why large-scale conflicts have started again in Syria is that the interconnected problems of this country have remained unresolved for over 13 years.”

Fidan also pointed out, “Ignoring the legitimate demands of the opposition and the regime’s failure to engage sincerely in the political process was a mistake.” He continued, “Lastly, large-scale attacks on civilians have reignited the civil war. We have repeatedly made our warnings to all concerned parties. The latest developments once again show that Damascus must seek reconciliation with its own people and the legitimate opposition. Turkey is ready to provide all necessary support in this regard. We will continue our coordination with Iran, with whom we have been working within the Astana process, in the future. We have always supported Syria’s territorial integrity and unity, and we will continue to do so.”
