SABIHA_GOKCEN_AIRPORTIt was only a short while ago that ATATURK AIRPORT (on the European part) was the only airport to serve a giant city like Istanbul and SABIHA GOKCEN was rarely used with a very low traffic not even worth mentioning.

In time though it became obvious that the giant city was in need of an additional -functional- airport and indeed on the Anatolian (Asian) part.

Eventually a few years ago LIMAK Group won the BOT rights for the facility and it went through a big expansion and renovation project. It has now multiple capacity sufficient enough to serve tens of millions of passengers each and every year. Accordingly many flights to Asia Minor (Anadolu), Middle East and the Far east take of from SABIHA GOKCEN Airport.

It has grown so fast that it was chosen “world’s fastest growing airport” by Airports Council International (ACI) based on the ACI’s World Airport Traffic Report 2010. The report says SABIHA GOKCEN had a 26 percent rise in passengers to a total of 7,889,829 according to 6,278,923 passenger in the first seven months of 2010.

The report ranked the airport as the world’s fastest growing airport among 1,300 airports in 157 countries around the world. The report suggests that traffic at Sabiha Gokcen Airport jumped by 75 percent last year.

Brazil’s Campinas Airport placed second on the list, while an airport in South America’s Rio de Janeiro came in third. Forty-seven airliners launch flights to 68 international and 27 domestic destinations from Sabiha Gokcen Airport.
