SCHENGEN VISA MORE DIFFICULT

Stricter Border Controls and Visa Restrictions Amid Migration Concerns: Efforts to combat illegal immigration across Europe have led to tighter border controls and increased restrictions on visa applications, directly affecting Turkish citizens.

Germany, in particular, has taken the lead in imposing stricter measures, effectively halting Schengen visa processing for applicants from Turkey. This trend has quickly spread to other EU member states, which have also implemented additional controls and slowed down their visa issuance processes.

Turkish Citizens Among the Most Affected

As border restrictions tighten across the Schengen area, Turkish citizens are facing the most significant obstacles. Following Germany’s move, other countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria, France, and the Netherlands have also increased border checks, transitioning the Schengen zone from free movement to a more regulated system. These new controls are believed to be in response to growing illegal migration pressures and increasing abuse of the visa system. Consequently, visa approvals for Turkish nationals have become extremely rare.

Visa Appointment Waiting Times Exceed One Year

According to Turkish newspaper Sözcü, the visa appointment process has been severely delayed, with waiting periods stretching beyond a year. One of the primary reasons for this delay is the high volume of applications combined with data suggesting that approximately one-third of individuals entering Europe illegally from Turkey are Turkish citizens. This has led authorities to adopt a more cautious and restrictive stance.

Unofficial Visa Freeze Across Multiple EU States

Although no formal announcement has been made, there is a growing belief that several EU countries have informally ceased processing most individual visa applications from Turkey. Reports suggest that very few applications are being approved, and those that are granted tend to fall within extremely limited categories.

Widespread Corruption in the Appointment System

Another major issue exacerbating the crisis involves allegations of corruption and fraud within the visa appointment systems. An investigation by journalist Ali Gülen from Sözcü revealed that organized networks have gained control over the appointment booking systems, particularly for countries like Germany. These groups reportedly acquire large numbers of appointments and resell them at exorbitant prices, leaving regular applicants unable to access the system for months. Following these revelations, several embassies and consulates have launched investigations and begun restructuring their appointment systems, which has further slowed down visa processing.

Stricter Visa Criteria in Response to Asylum Concerns

A contributing factor to the reluctance of EU countries to issue visas is the increasing number of individuals entering Europe legally and then applying for asylum. This trend is particularly pronounced in Germany and Italy, prompting authorities to impose stricter screening measures and tougher visa criteria. As a result, the vast majority of visa applications from Turkey are now being denied or left pending indefinitely.

No Official Statement from the EU or Member States

Despite the growing difficulties faced by Turkish applicants, there has been no official statement from the European Union, Germany, or any other affected EU member state. Nonetheless, it is evident that visa processing has become significantly more stringent, impacting nearly all categories, including tourist and business visas.
