Storm Goretti Intensifies Across Europe, Disrupting Travel in the UK and France

Storm Goretti is gaining strength across Europe, prompting authorities in the United Kingdom and France to brace for major travel disruptions caused by heavy snowfall, strong winds, and rapidly falling temperatures.

The UK’s Met Office has issued a rare red-level wind alert for the southwest of England, while amber alerts remain in effect across Wales, the Midlands, and parts of northern England due to snowfall. Officials warn that conditions may become dangerous, particularly for transportation networks.

Airports Close in the Channel Islands

Airports in the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey have announced closures from 6:00 p.m. due to the storm. At Jersey Airport, most flights scheduled after 5:00 p.m. have been cancelled or rescheduled. Airport authorities stated that they hope to reopen on Friday, although some flights may still be affected, and passengers are advised to check with their airlines.

Guernsey Airport has also suspended the majority of its afternoon flights, with early morning services scheduled for tomorrow cancelled as well. The UK’s largest regional airline, Loganair, has halted flights to the Scottish islands of Orkney, Shetland, and Lewis, along with services to the Channel Islands. Meanwhile, London’s Gatwick and Heathrow airports are experiencing delays and cancellations on routes to and from Ireland, the Channel Islands, and several European destinations.

Rail Services Suspended

Rail travel has also been severely disrupted by heavy snow, strong winds, and rainfall. National Rail has warned passengers that replacement road transport will not be available, citing hazardous travel conditions.

Across the Channel, France’s national rail operator SNCF has suspended numerous services this evening. Storm Goretti is expected to bring winds reaching up to 160 kilometers per hour along France’s western coast, particularly in the Normandy region, raising concerns over further disruptions.
