SunExpress Launches Massive 12-Aircraft Hangar Investment in Antalya
SunExpress, the joint venture between Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa, is celebrating its 35th anniversary with one of the biggest investments in its history. During a press conference in Antalya, CEO Max Kownatzki revealed plans for fleet modernization, a high-capacity flight simulator, and a 12-aircraft maintenance hangar.
He explained that the hangar project goes beyond light maintenance, covering heavy maintenance as well. Construction will be completed within three years. Once operational, the hangar will also serve other airlines, making Antalya a stronger hub for aviation services. In the first stage, 500 people will be hired, reaching a total of 1,000 employees.
Max Kownatzki noted that the initial plan years ago involved a 6-aircraft facility. After a pause due to changes in land allocation, the project has now doubled in capacity. It will be executed in three phases—contracting, construction, and commissioning—and is expected to make a positive impact on the company’s balance sheet.
Fleet Expansion and Route Growth
SunExpress has carried over 13 million passengers since the beginning of the year, marking an 8% increase compared to the previous period. The airline achieved an 85% load factor and expanded its network with 15 new international routes for the summer season, connecting the Turkish Riviera and Anatolia to key cities in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.
The company continues to grow its fleet with 132 aircraft ordered from Boeing, including 87 firm orders. Nine of these planes will be delivered by January. Currently, SunExpress operates 85 aircraft on 237 routes across 35 countries.
Hotel Prices Expected to Stabilize
Kownatzki also commented on the hotel pricing trend, noting that last summer’s sharp price increases negatively affected passenger numbers. He expects more stable pricing in the coming season. According to him, hotel rates rose well above inflation and currency fluctuations, but this year the market is showing signs of balance.
He added that as long as prices remain within reasonable inflation limits, travel demand will stay strong. The company anticipates avoiding the kind of disproportionate price hikes experienced earlier, which will benefit both travelers and airlines.
