UKRAINE CONFLICT AND RUSSIA

The tension between Western imperialism and Russia in the Ukraine crisis is observed to be increasing, gradually. The G7 and EU foreign ministers have increased pressure on Russia. Moscow says the West is piling troops into Ukraine. It is reported that Putin wants to meet with Biden.

Threats from Western countries are increasing to Russia, which the United States has targeted in the Ukraine crisis. The Foreign Ministers of the EU countries who met in Brussels yesterday before the Summit of European Union (EU) Leaders to be held on Dec. 16, discussed the sanctions that to be imposed on Russia’s possible invasion of Ukraine. The foreign ministers of the G7 countries who met over the weekend in Liverpool also took a common stance against Russia, while Moscow remains decisively determined to strengthen diplomacy against all these successive pressures. The Kremlin has announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to meet with US President Joe Biden face-to-face, while the videoconference meeting between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Dec. 15 is also seen as critical.

EU: RUSSIA MAY PAY A HEAVY PRICE

Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union (EU) on Foreign Relations and Security Policy, said yesterday that EU Foreign Ministers would send a clear signal to Russia about Ukraine. Noting that the EU was discussing possible economic sanctions against Russia together with the United States and the United Kingdom, Borrell said: “In any case, we will send a clear message that Russia’s military action in Ukraine will bring a very heavy price to them. We are working with the United States and the United Kingdom on when, how and in what way possible sanctions will be made in coordination.”

POSSIBLE SANCTIONS AGAINST RUSSIA

While the EU meeting was underway in Brussels, a statement from the Council of Europe (EU) announced new sanctions resolutions against the Russian security company Wagner group. The Wagner group has threatened the stability of Mali and has agreed to an arrangement that will allow the EU to impose sanctions against it,” the statement said. Some senior diplomats from EU member states also told Reuters news agency that possible sanctions on Russia could have a wide scope, ranging from travel bans to freezing the country’s assets abroad. Another sanction could be the decommissioning of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, which includes the shipment of natural gas from Russia to Germany, the news said, adding that not allowing Russian banks to trade on international markets was also among the options on the table.
