The European Union (EU) has added 21 Russian airlines to its blacklist on the grounds that they do not meet international safety standards.

The European Commission has announced an update of the EU Air Safety List, which includes airlines that are subject to a ban or restriction of operations in Europe. With the update, the number of airlines banned from flying in EU airspace has increased to 117.

“WE DO NOT MIX SECURITY WITH POLITICS”

Noting that 21 companies certified in Russia, including Aeroflot, were added to the list, which included companies that did not meet international safety standards, Adina Valean, a Member of the European Commission Responsible for Transport, said: “I want to make it clear that this decision is not another sanction against Russia. It was taken on technical and safety grounds. We don’t mix security with politics,” he said.
