TURKEY-HEALTH-TOURISM

Turkey’s health tourism sector has maintained its impressive momentum, generating $761.5 million during the first quarter of 2026 while providing medical services to 302,487 international patients.

The country continues to attract visitors from Europe, the Middle East, the Balkans, the Turkic republics and North Africa, thanks to its combination of modern healthcare, experienced medical professionals and competitive treatment costs.

Popular treatments include cosmetic and plastic surgery, hair transplantation, dental care, eye treatments, orthopaedics, cardiology and oncology, making Turkey one of the world’s leading destinations for medical travel.

Higher Spending Shows Growing Confidence

According to Mustafa Eröğüt, Board Member of the Service Exporters’ Association and Chairman of its Healthcare Services Committee, Turkey welcomed 1.39 million international patients in 2025, generating more than $3 billion in health tourism revenue.

The positive trend has continued into 2026. While patient numbers remain strong, one of the most encouraging developments is the sharp increase in spending per visitor.

Average health tourism revenue per patient rose by around 39 percent compared with the same period last year. This suggests that Turkey is no longer attracting visitors simply because treatments are affordable, but increasingly because of its advanced healthcare infrastructure, internationally accredited hospitals and highly qualified specialists.

Patients Arrive from Around 180 Countries

Turkey’s geographical location allows it to serve patients from a remarkably wide area. Today, medical travellers arrive from approximately 180 countries.

Germany, the United Kingdom, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Russia, Libya and Gulf countries remain among the largest source markets. At the same time, demand from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries has grown noticeably in recent years.

Industry representatives also see significant future potential in Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, North America and additional Gulf markets as Turkey continues to expand its international presence.

Quality Healthcare Across Many Specialties

Turkey has become well known for offering world-class treatment across a broad range of medical specialties.

International patients most frequently seek cosmetic surgery, hair transplantation, dental treatments, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, cardiology, oncology, fertility treatments and obesity surgery.

While aesthetic procedures continue to generate a large share of health tourism income, Turkey is also strengthening its reputation in highly specialised fields such as cancer treatment, cardiovascular surgery and organ transplantation.

Modern Healthcare at Competitive Prices

One of Turkey’s greatest advantages is its ability to combine advanced medical technology with relatively affordable treatment costs.

The country now has more than 1,500 healthcare institutions providing medical tourism services across over 40 cities, supported by hundreds of internationally accredited facilities.

Compared with many European countries, treatment costs are often 40 to 70 percent lower, while maintaining high clinical standards and experienced medical teams.

Higher-Value Treatments Are Driving Growth

The average international patient now spends around $2,500 during their treatment in Turkey.

However, more complex procedures such as oncology, cardiovascular surgery, robotic surgery and organ transplantation can generate between $10,000 and $50,000 per patient.

This reflects Turkey’s growing position not only as a destination for high patient volumes but also as a provider of advanced, high-value medical care.

Strengthening the Heal in Türkiye Brand

Industry leaders say future growth will depend on continuing to improve patient experience, investing in advanced medical technologies and expanding Turkey’s international reputation.

The Heal in Türkiye initiative remains the country’s official international health tourism platform, helping overseas patients find authorised hospitals and healthcare providers with confidence.

Government support through international promotion campaigns, trade fairs and branding programmes also continues to strengthen Turkey’s competitiveness in the global healthcare market.

Patient Safety Remains a Priority

Officials also emphasise the importance of choosing authorised healthcare providers and avoiding unlicensed intermediaries that operate solely through social media.

Turkey remains one of the world’s leading countries in the number of healthcare institutions holding Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, reinforcing its reputation for patient safety, clinical quality and internationally recognised healthcare standards.

As demand for quality medical care continues to grow worldwide, Turkey appears well positioned to strengthen its role as one of the leading global destinations for health tourism.

If this is for Business Turkey Today, I would tighten it a little further and give it a slightly more analytical, business-oriented tone. I think that would suit your readership even better.
