TURKEY PRICES IN TURKEY

Turkeys, which are indispensable for Christmas tables, remained in the hands of the producer in the market due to their high prices this year. Citizens said that it was now a dream to buy a turkey, the prices of which exceed a thousand liras – when they cannot even afford to buy chicken from the market.

This year, poultry producers in the Sur district of Diyarbakır are experiencing the anxiety of not finding buyers for their turkeys, which they have been spending a lot of effort and money to grow, throughout the summer.

Citizens whose purchasing power is declining every day are also surprised by the prices they see by walking around the markets.

FEMALES ARE SOLD AT 600-800 AND MALES COST 900-1200 LIRAS

A turkey producer (farmer) stated that he had been doing poultry husbandry for 20 years and had never seen such a recession even though it was New Year’s Day.

He said that due to the volatility in ready-made feed prices, electricity, transportation, shepherd expenses, the prices naturally increased.

“IN THE PAST WE USED TO SELL THEM VERY EASILY”

Another producer/farmer said, “In past years, turkeys we brought to the market on religious days such as Christmas, used to be sold out in a very short time. Now we can sell 35 turkeys out of 200 for instance. The rest remains in our hands. We will feed these animals until spring and prepare them for Ramadan feast now.”
