Somalia-kidsThe first Turkish aid shipment to address the drought crisis sweeping through the Horn of Africa will reach the continent by plane on Sunday, Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay) head Tekin Kucukali said yesterday.

The Ship of Benevolence will also deliver aid to Somalia collected in a campaign launched by Kizilay, daily Sabah, and the Turkish Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA). “A donation in the amount of 5 Turkish liras can be made by sending a blank SMS to 2868,” Kucukali said.

Also, by calling Kizilay’s free donation and communication line, you can join the efforts to help those in need. Donations can also be made to the Red Crescent’s accounts at all banks, as well as through our website, www.kizilay.org.tr.

Kizilay’s postal checks numbered 2868 at PTT branches can be used to help the effort, while donors can also make contributions at all Kizilay branches.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan extended full support to the aid campaign, saying, “We can feed a little child in Somalia, make an orphan happy, ease the suffering of a mother, and reprieve a father. I know that our people are merciful. I believe that our people will be more sensitive during the holy month of Ramadan. This campaign will give hope to many people. I fully support the aid campaign.”

He added, “We have to give full cooperation to the people suffering in Africa … I call on our citizens, especially our non-governmental organizations, businessmen, and philanthropists, to participate in this campaign.”
