Turkey informs WTO it will apply quota for steel imports to protect its steel industry

Turkey informed WTO about the steel import quota to enter into force on October 27. Accordingly Turkey will apply customs duty on imports exceeding specified quota.

In the statement submitted it was expressed that concerned measures were taken in response to the tariffs introduced by the US and the European Union. The statement also explained that the government had seen serious indicative points that concerned increase in steel imports would cause serious damage in the domestic market.

Based on the declaration made to WTO quota for flat products was determined as 3.1 million tons.  Turkey had imported 8.4 million tons of flat products in 2017.

On the other hand the quota for long products was determined as 558,534 tons compared to 1.3 million tons of imports realized in 2017.
