Turkey Plans Social Media Ban for Children Under 15
Turkey is moving toward a major digital safety reform that would block children under 15 from opening social media accounts. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the regulation is in its final stage and will soon be submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
Under-15s to Be Restricted Online
According to Uraloğlu, the proposal will prevent children younger than 15 from creating accounts on social networking platforms. They will instead be allowed to access only games appropriate for their age group.
The new framework will introduce mandatory identity verification and impose greater responsibility on internet service providers and social media companies. Authorities say inspections will also be tightened.
The minister stressed that the primary goal is to protect children from harmful and misleading digital content, particularly as artificial intelligence makes fake and highly realistic material easier to produce.
5G Era Begins in April
Uraloğlu also highlighted Turkey’s technological progress, announcing that the country is preparing to launch 5G services on April 1, 2026, with speeds expected to reach up to 20 gigabits per second.
Officials aim to expand 5G coverage nationwide within two years, enabling advanced applications such as autonomous driving, remote medical procedures, smart factories, and high-quality live broadcasting.
