Turkey is facing big changes in all walks of life to include social, economic, politic and administrative ones.

The Turkish government has accomplished many changes in all areas and the most recent one has to do with “the status change of several towns” in the country.

Within this framework, the bill regarding the status change of 13 towns has been submitted to parliament.

The project was started when PM Erdoğan said before June 12 , 2011 elections that  “provinces with a population of over 750 thousand were going to be upgraded to the metropolitan municipality status”.

It was declared by officials that 13 towns namely Aydın, Balıkesir, Denizli, Hatay, Malatya, Manisa, Kahramanmaraş, Mardin, Muğla, Tekirdağ, Trabzon, Şanlıurfa and Van would be upgraded to  the metropolian status.

Thus the number of metropolian municipalities (currently at 16) will be increased to 29 after which the number of electorate to vote for metropolian municipaliets is expected to go up to 56 million.

On the other hand however, the government will abolish the corporate identity of 559 mayorships with a population under 2 million in 52 provinces

Following this new practice to come, the borders of the metropolian municipality will be accepted as provincial borders.

In line with that arrangement, those casting their votes in the rural areas will be able to vote for the metropolitan mayon, which will have a direct bearing on

Turkey is awaiting the local elections on October 27th, 2013 and after referred administrative changes take place, citizens using their votes in the rural areas will be given the opportunity to vote for the metropolitan municipality.
