Turkey’s Plastic Manufacturers call for production of domestic raw materials

Turkish economy has been trying to cope with several difficulties such as current account deficit for a long while. Indeed sectors such as the plastic industry substantially contribute to this deficit as the raw materials they use are imported from abroad.

This negative situation has always been a major issue of concern in terms of the sector’s contribution to the economy and the need for production of concerned raw materials has always been on the agenda of the sector.

It is a fact that petrochemicals sector is one of the priority areas that will contribute to the reduction of the current account deficit. Now that the STAR Refinery has been put into operation the issue is on the agenda again and the sector representatives have raised hopes that local production could be realized in case concerned investments are accelerated.

The representatives of the sector comment that “The investments announced for the raw materials used extensively in the plastics sector will contribute to the closure of foreign trade deficit and new investment opportunities. Petrochemical investments which will exceed US$ 10 billion when completed will enable Turkey’s plastic sector which is 7th in the world in processing capacity, and the second in Europe currently, to grow stronger in the global markets”.
