UK issues travel warning for citizens traveling to Turkey

The UK has issued a travel warning for citizens traveling to Turkey regarding counterfeit alcohol. The warning also includes advice on what to be mindful of during Ramadan.

Following reports that more than 100 people in Ankara and Istanbul died after consuming counterfeit alcohol made with methanol, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office released an urgent travel advisory about Turkey.

According to a report by Özlem Dinç from Gazete Duvar, the Ministry urged travelers from the UK to purchase alcoholic beverages only from licensed shops, check the labels and caps of alcohol bottles, and avoid homemade alcoholic drinks.

Additionally, the Foreign Ministry updated its advice for Ramadan, which will begin in March. The Ministry stated that during Ramadan in Turkey, it may be risky to eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum in public places during the day (including in your car), play loud music, dance, or use offensive language in public. The advisory also called on travelers to dress according to “local rules.”
