Updated news: Euthanasia for stray animals to be implemented

A proposal submitted to the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) introduces a new approach for handling stray animals: the “catch-neuter-hold-adopt” model. While euthanasia for healthy animals is prohibited, euthanasia will be applied to animals that are rabid or spread epidemics. The decision to euthanize these animals will be made by a veterinary board.

The ruling AK Party has submitted a 17-article bill to the TBMM Presidency that proposes amendments to the Animal Protection Law.

 Key Details:

1. Catch-Neuter-Hold-Adopt Model: Transitioning to a model where stray animals are caught, neutered, held, and then adopted.

2. Euthanasia Restrictions: Healthy animals cannot be euthanized. However, rabid and epidemic-spreading animals will be subject to euthanasia.

3. Veterinary Board Decision: Euthanasia will be decided by a board of veterinarians.

4. Aggressive or Infectious Animals: Stray animals that are aggressive, have infectious or incurable diseases, or are prohibited from being adopted will be euthanized by local authorities.

5. Public Safety and Biodiversity: If the stray animal population poses a threat to public safety, transmits diseases between animals or from animals to humans, or damages water resources, wildlife, and biodiversity, euthanasia will be applied.

6. Support and Incentives for Municipalities: Municipalities will receive support and incentives to establish shelters, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers.
