How will the temperature levels be during the winter months? Are we going to experience a mild winter? Should we expect seasonal normals, or shall we experience extreme cold?

This coming winter, temperatures are expected to be above average across the country, by about 0.75 to 1.5 degrees. Additionally, there is a possibility of an increase in the number of extreme weather events in our country.

The beginning of the fall season in the North Pole, along with the increase in glaciers and intense snowfall in Siberia during the fall season, is important for our country. In the past, in years when El Niño occurred, the fall and winter seasons were rainy. Although the current fall and upcoming winter may not be as rainy as in the past, there is a high probability of some rainfall.

LOTS OF RAIN, BE PREPARED FOR FLOODS

The question everyone is most curious about is whether we will see snow this year. What are the predictions for precipitation in the winter months?

According to the forecasts for the 2023-2024 winter, rainfall in the form of rain is expected to be around or above average across the country. This means we should be prepared for floods and water inundations.

In the northern regions of our country, particularly in Istanbul, the South and East Marmara, the western and central Black Sea, there is a high probability of the most intense rainfall, while the Aegean coasts (excluding the southern Aegean and inland areas) and the Mediterranean coasts (excluding the west of Antalya) are likely to be less rainy regions.

Therefore, in densely populated areas like Istanbul, special attention should be paid to buildings in riverbeds and low-lying areas. Precautions should be taken against floods and water inundations.

LESS SNOW IN ISTANBUL, MUCH MORE THAN AVERAGE IN EASTERN BLACK SEA

There is a high probability of below-average snowfall in Istanbul and the Thrace region this year. In the southeast of Marmara, the north of Eastern Anatolia, the inland areas of the Eastern Black Sea, the southeast of Southeastern Anatolia, there is a significant probability of snowfall well above average, while the eastern part of Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, and the eastern part of the Black Sea are expected to have below-average snowfall.

We will feel the cooling and chilling effects more in November, especially in the Marmara region. Of course, we are discussing all of this based on scientific predictions. For now, we can say that temperature values in November will fall below average in Marmara. Furthermore, in November, rainfall will exceed the averages in the western parts of the country, including Marmara. November is expected to be somewhat rainier.
