When will the 2024 local elections be held in Turkey?

LOCAL ELECTION IN TURKEY

Following the 28th term parliamentary and presidential elections held in May, Turkey is scheduled to have local elections in 2024. While political parties have already started their preparations for the elections, voters have been focusing on the date of the local elections.

With the publication in the Official Gazette bearing the signature of President Erdoğan, the dates for the 2024 local elections have been officially announced. The Supreme Election Board (YSK) has published its decision regarding the local elections, in the Official Gazette.

LOCAL ELECTIONS ARE HELD EVERY 5 YEARS

Preparations have begun for the local elections, which are held every five years. The election date, also known as the municipal and neighborhood headman (muhtar) elections, has been published in the Official Gazette. The last local elections were held in 2019. Along with the local elections, mayors, metropolitan mayors, municipal council members, provincial general assembly members, and muhtars are determined. In the elections held last May, more than 55,835 out of over 64 million registered voters in Turkey and abroad, as well as at customs gates, cast their votes. As of the local election date, every Turkish citizen who has reached the age of 18 will have the right to vote. So, when will the 2024 municipal and neighborhood headman elections be held?

2024 LOCAL ELECTION DATE

According to the decision of the Supreme Election Board published in the Official Gazette with the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the local elections will be held on March 31, 2024. Voter registration updates can be made until the start date of the election calendar, which will be determined by the YSK, starting from October 1, 2023.
