Crisis in Ukraine continues to be a potential source of confrontation for the world
As it looks, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia does not seem to have any chances of being resolved easily, at least as far as the near future is concerned. It goes without saying Putin would hardly tolerate plans played by the Western block to weaken Russia’s position in the region both in terms of strategic benefits as well as the quite strong image this country is now in possession of – thanks to clever and determined moves by Putin.

On the other hand, we already know clearly this is exactly what Putin wants, as Ukraine crisis in the region as well as the one in ME both have a single ultimate goal which is to serve his expansionist strategies in the world. This is not to forget his interest in Libya either, it goes without saying. Therefore, if it had not been for prevailing reasons, Putin would have still found some other excuses to ensure the tension was increased to create a similar conflict. So, when we look at the core of the problem it is sort of a “mission impossible” case really, with all the determination Russia’s President possesses. The question “What is the red line that would stop Putin” must have surely been the main topic on the agenda of the west for a long while now.

As for the current crisis between Kiev and Moscow, the reason (at least on the surface) seems to be the elections in Ukraine. It is reported that the relation between two countries is excessively strained again due to the elections in separatist pro-Russian Donbas region, in the east. In fact, the Ukrainian administration and Western countries declared the elections held in Lugansk and Donetsk national republics illegal yesterday, while the Russian government said that the two regions in the eastern part of Ukraine had used their legal rights.

The voting started at 8.00 yesterday morning in two separatist regions and continued until 20.00 in the evening. When the votes are counted, it will be determined who will be the new leaders of the Lugansk and Donetsk separatist regions and which parties will be included in the local parliament.

On the other hand, Kiev Prosecutor’s Office launched legal action 24 hours before elections in the separatist regions which Ukraine declared illegal. The office declared all candidates participating in the elections would be sentenced to life imprisonment in the investigation launched under the article “Attack on Ukraine’s territorial integrity “. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister who evaluated the elections in the separatist regions said, “The results will have no validity. The only result would be the introduction of new sanctions against Russia.”
