29 thousand people sued for defamation against President Erdogan in 3 years

TURKISH COURTS DEFAMATION AGAINST PRESIDENT

In the last 3 years, 29 thousand 089 people have been sued for defamation against President Tayyip Erdogan. In 2018, 6,326 cases were filed, while this number increased to 13,990 at the end of 2019.

According to the Justice Department’s judicial statistics for 2020, 9,773 people, 152 of whom are foreign nationals, went to trial on charges of insulting the president in 2020. Of these people, 84 of them are in the age group of 12-15 and 206 are between 15 and 18, the number totaling up to 290 children. As for the age of 18 and over, 9,331 people were tried, of whom 8,235 were men and 96 were women.

3,655 of these people were convicted and 519 were acquitted. Decisions such as delayed sentencing for 3,736 people, lack of authority for 13 thousand people, lack of duty, dismissal of the case for 706 people, lack of need for punishment, rejection of the case were taken.

Of the cases filed, 34.4 percent resulted in convictions and 35.1 percent with delayed sentencing. The proportion of those acquitted remained at 14.3. In 2018, 6,326 cases were filed, while this number increased to 13,990 at the end of 2019.
