6.9 Earthquake in Izmir, buildings destroyed… 114 people killed, hundreds injured

An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 occurred in Izmir. The earthquake whose epicenter was off Seferihisar was felt all over Marmara, including Istanbul. AFAD, which announced that 114 people lost their lives (1 of whom drowned) and 1026 people were injured in the earthquake also reported that search and rescue efforts were continuing in 17 buildings.

AFAD said in a statement “A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck off Seferihisar in the Aegean Sea at 14.51 am on Friday”. The nearest settlement of the earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 16.54 km, is 17.26 km from Seferihisar district of Izmir province. After the earthquake, there were a total of 107 aftershocks, including 21 with a magnitude of 4. (10 October 2020)
