A big investment in Turkey from the Chinese lithium battery giant Ganfeng Lithium
Chinese lithium battery giant Ganfeng Lithium has announced a strategic partnership with Yiğit Akü in Turkey, involving a $500 million investment. As one of the world’s largest lithium battery manufacturers, Ganfeng Lithium plans to establish a facility in Turkey with an annual production capacity of 5 GWh.
This facility will focus on producing lithium-ion battery cells, battery modules, battery packs, energy storage systems, and related technologies.
Yiğit Akü, founded in Ankara in 1976, is one of Turkey’s largest battery manufacturers, with an annual production capacity of 7 million batteries. Since 2013, the company has been producing lithium batteries for electric vehicles. The joint venture with Ganfeng aims to increase lithium-ion battery production capacity in Turkey and supply products to both the Turkish energy storage market and international markets.
The new facility will employ 400 people and cover 132,200 square meters of enclosed space. It will include R&D centers, technical training centers, material testing centers, and will focus on high technology.
Ganfeng Lithium plans to produce lithium batteries for various sectors, including energy storage systems, electric industrial vehicles, telecommunications, and marine applications. The investment in Turkey is also expected to target exports to the European market. The specific location of the facility has not yet been disclosed.
