A major change in food safety regulation has just come into effect in Turkey. As of today, restaurants, cafes, markets, butcher shops, greengrocers, and other food-selling businesses are required to display a QR code that links to their official inspection records. This new rule, introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, aims to increase transparency and empower consumers to make informed decisions.

QR Codes Are Now Mandatory

The QR code system, which was optional last year, has now become a legal requirement. The Ministry emphasizes that the goal is to ensure easier access to safe food and make inspection data transparent to the public. Businesses must place the QR code in a clearly visible spot within their premises, allowing customers to scan and view up-to-date inspection details.

How Consumers Can Use the QR Code

Consumers simply need to use the mobile app Tarım Cebimde (which means “Agriculture in My Pocket”) to scan the QR code displayed at any participating business. Once scanned, the app shows the business’s registration or approval number, its name, address, and the date of the most recent official inspection. It’s a quick way to check if the place you’re buying from has been officially registered and inspected.

Easy and Free for Businesses to Generate

Businesses don’t need to worry about additional costs or red tape. They can generate their own QR code for free, 24/7, through the official website guvenilirgida.tarimorman.gov.tr. All they need is a tax number or national ID number, along with their business registration number. The process is designed to be simple and accessible.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Businesses that fail to implement the QR code system will face administrative fines. Inspections will continue to include advanced techniques such as laser thermometers and DNA-level food safety testing. In case consumers spot non-compliant businesses, they are encouraged to report them via the Alo 174 Gıda Hattı, Turkey’s official food safety hotline.

Public Involvement: The Most Powerful Inspector is You

This new measure doesn’t just hold businesses accountable—it puts power in the hands of the people. With inspection data literally one scan away, every consumer becomes a participant in the food safety process. It’s a smart step toward a more transparent, healthier food system where citizens play a key role in monitoring and trust-building.

In this new era, the most effective food inspector might just be the person standing in line for lunch.
