About thousand fossils of 7.5 million years old found in Kayseri, Turkey

MORE THAN 7 MILLION YEAR OLD FOSSILS FOUND IN KAYSERI

Prof. BASOGLU of Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University informed that his studies for the discovery of fossils belonging to 7.5 million years ago in Kayseri had ended this year and said, “Nearly a thousand fossils dated to 7.5 million years ago have been found. We are expecting different types of fossils to be found in Kayseri.”

A shepherd named Murat Adiyaman had found a bone fragment while grazing goats on the banks of the Yamula Dam in the Tashan District in 2017. During the examination of the samples taken, it was determined that the bone fragments belonged to 6 to 7.5 million years ago.

In 2018, excavation work was started with the permission of the General Directorate of Cultural Assets and Museums of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and with the support of the Metropolitan Municipality.

Initiated under the leadership of Prof. BASOGLU7.5 million year old fossils belonging to elephant, three hoofed horses, bovidae and rhinoceros were found for the first time. This year’s excavations were carried out around the old HIRKA Quarter (in the area). Fossils belonging to many species, especially rhinoceros, elephant, predators, were found in the old settlement by the withdrawal of the Yamula dam waters.
