Greece is introducing new tax and fee regulations aimed at alleviating the pressures caused by overtourism and ensuring economic sustainability. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced these measures, which are specifically designed to reduce visitor density in popular tourist areas.

ADDITIONAL FEES FOR CRUISE PASSENGERS & INCREASE IN ACCOMODATION TAXES

The measures include additional fees for cruise passengers and an increase in accommodation taxes. These additional fees will be higher on popular islands such as Santorini and Mykonos. Furthermore, accommodation taxes will be raised during the April-October period, with the aim of addressing the impacts of the climate crisis.

Greece is also making changes to its “Golden Visa” program. Previously, foreigners could obtain an unlimited residence permit by purchasing property, but under the new regulations, they will be required to make a minimum local investment of 250,000 euros.

BAN ON SHORT-TERM RENTALS

Additionally, the Prime Minister announced a ban on short-term rentals in three main areas of Athens for at least one year. Short-term rentals have exacerbated the housing crisis, leading to rising rental prices, and steps are being taken to address this issue.
