With recent alarming news about severe turbulence on planes making headlines, aviation and flight experts have identified the best seats to choose to minimize its impact.

Turbulence, which refers to the shaking or trembling of an airplane caused by disruptions in airflow, is a common fear for many travelers. It occurs when warm air currents rise from the heated ground and meet cold air, typically found at the boundaries of jet streams, over mountains, and in certain storm clouds. Sometimes it can be so severe that many people worldwide are afraid to fly because of it. However, there are some methods to reduce the effects of turbulence.

An experienced pilot (J. Nicholson) recommends the front seats to those who feel nauseous, stating, “The back of the plane moves more, while the front moves less.” American Airlines

Another pilot (D. Tajer) from American Airlines agrees, saying “the ride in the back of the plane often feels less stable.” He also suggests sitting near the wings if you can’t handle a bumpy ride, explaining, “The wings are located closer to the plane’s center of gravity. Therefore, sitting near the wings tends to feel less turbulent compared to the tail section where vertical movement is most pronounced.”

LOOK AT THE WINGS

D. Slotnick, a senior aviation officer says that seats near the wings generally mitigate the feeling of turbulence.

Following a recent incident on Singapore Airlines, where a passenger died and several were injured, some flight attendants recommended sitting close to a window. Tajer emphasizes, “Regardless of where you sit, always listen to the advice given by the crew at the start of your flight and keep your seatbelt fastened at all times. Wearing your seatbelt can make the difference between safety and injury. It’s that simple.”

Nicholson adds that visual references, like looking out the window and focusing on the horizon, can help suppress the effects of turbulence. (sözcü)
