Talking about the most recent picture of democratic politics in Turkey following the May 2023 elections one thing is certain; That is, the fact the opposition suffered a defeat in election has unluckily brought despair for the majority of the citizens supporting opposition.

One of the main reasons for this is that opposition leaders have not accepted responsibility and stepped aside to facilitate a rejuvenation of the opposition. Many believe failing to do so will result in a further strengthening of the authoritarian regime (and weakening of the support for opposition).

REGIME EXPECTED TO CONSOLIDATE ITS POWER AND RESTRICT OPPOSITION ACTIVITIES

On the other hand, those advocating for a return to democracy in Turkey are likely to face challenges, with the regime expected to consolidate its power and restrict opposition activities. The regime apparently targets to employ two strategies: The first one has to do with undermining the belief in a change of power and the other targets confining the opposition within its predefined boundaries.

OPPOSITION SHOULD ADOPT A RADICAL CHANGE

Some experts suggest opposition should adopt a radical approach, aim to push beyond the regime’s limits and redefine Turkey’s historical narrative to tackle concerned challenges. They also recommend exploring new forms of organization that extend beyond traditional political parties and developing new leadership profiles that can foster collaboration among diverse groups and ideas.

OPPOSITION LEADERS SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR A FRESH NEW APPROACH

In summary, the opposition leaders should take responsibility and target a fresh and innovative approach to democratic politics in Turkey’s future, to overcome the difficulties posed by the regime’s total control over the country and the system.
