Ancient Spots in Turkey: Karatepe-Aslantaş Open-Air Museum

As Turkey’s first open-air museum, the Karatepe-Aslantaş Archaeological Site was opened to visitors after excavations began in 1947. The site, dating back to the Late Hittite Period, consists of two monumental city gates, a central roadway, adjacent structures, statues, and various archaeological remains.

Karatepe-Aslantaş Open-Air Museum is situated within the Karatepe-Aslantaş National Park in the Kadirli district of Osmaniye.

Declared an open-air museum and protected along with the surrounding natural forest under a historical national park status, the site preserves and displays its cultural landscape in its natural environment. This approach ensures that the archaeological area is protected and managed in situ, maintaining its full artistic value.

Karatepe-Aslantaş was built in the 8th century BCE by Asativatas, a local ruler, as a border fortress against invasions from the north. With its grand walls and city gates, the fortress is a unique example of defense architecture from the era. The monumental gate entrances reflect a high level of architectural and artistic sophistication.

One of the site’s most significant contributions to archaeology is its bilingual inscriptions. On basalt stelae and reliefs found at both gates, texts are written in both the Phoenician alphabet and Luwian hieroglyphics. These bilingual inscriptions—among the longest in both scripts—played a key role in the decipherment of Luwian hieroglyphs.

A closed museum section was added in 2007 within the open-air museum to display artifacts found at the Karatepe and Domuztepe excavation sites.

In 2020, the Karatepe-Aslantaş Archaeological Site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
