Antalya’s Registered Orange Varieties Introduced

New BATEM-Bred Oranges Meet the Global Market

Orange varieties developed, registered and introduced to global markets by the Western Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute (BATEM) were showcased at a special promotional event in Antalya.

Antalya, which accounts for a large share of Turkey’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports, continues to play a key role in bringing new agricultural varieties into the economy. BATEM, which carries out R&D activities at five different locations across Antalya, has so far developed 185 plant varieties ranging from sesame to tropical crops, contributing significantly to Turkish agriculture.

Ten Orange Varieties on Display

At the event, attended by Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, orange varieties developed by BATEM—representing around 80 percent of Turkey’s total orange production—were introduced. The showcase featured ten varieties: Finike Yerli, Alanya Dilimli, BATEM Şekeri, BATEM Fatihi, BATEM Baharı, Navelina, Valencia Late, Moro, Yafa and Washington Navel.

Speaking at the event held at BATEM’s Muratpaşa Campus, Governor Şahin emphasized that agriculture is a strategic sector and noted that oranges, developed in cooperation with BATEM, have become one of Antalya’s most important sources of income and a symbol of the city.

From Research to the Table

The promotional program, organized by the Antalya Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, also included food prepared with oranges, along with exhibitions focused on agriculture and citrus production. The event concluded with a visit to the orange collection garden.
