QUORA QUESTION: As the Turkish Lira continues to collapse, will Erdogan be blamed for Turkey’s economic shortcomings?

ANSWER TO QUORA QUESTION

ERDOGAN has been in power in Turkey for almost 20 years now. He has always had the political power to realize almost any steps he has wished to put into effect. In fact he has introduced many amendments concerning economy, legal code, financial structure and even education and more. There is no doubt he is the one responsible for what Turkey has been going through in terms of economy mainly.

=> His governments have obtained an immense amount of revenues from increased taxes, privatized assets of the country such as factories and giant companies etc. We refer to funds which his administration has not used in the most efficient, rational manner though – and wasted on many areas of secondary importance rather than on areas such as improving production capabilities of Turkey.

=> On top of this, corruption – as stated by many unbiased exports and not denied by many reports – has been another major issue to have a strong negative impact on worsening of economy.

=> Said administrations have not been able to keep inflation under control – in recent years in particular – and not managed to realize an acceptable balance between currency rates, interest rates and the inflation.

The conclusion is “Global trends or incidents such as corona have obviously contributed to the negative progress but these are not to blame in the first place, for sure“.
