Babacan: TURKSTAT has become an ‘institute for adjusting figures’

Ali BABACAN, leader of DEVA Party has said, “It seems that there are two people in the country of 84 million people who do not know about the prices on the street: Mr. Erdogan and Mr. Bahceli.

The TURKSTAT had announced in May that annual inflation rose to 73.50 percent. However, this ratio had remained below the calculations of market surveys and experts. On the other hand, it was also criticized that TURKSTAT did not include a basket of items (on the contrary to usual practice all along) with the price of 410 products in its inflation report.

According to the Inflation Research Group (ENAG), annual inflation was 160 percent in May.

Babacan, who described TURKSTAT as an ‘institute for adjusting figures’ at his party’s Iskenderun district congress, said: “They turned the whole country into a Survivor set. People are trying to survive. The institute for adjusting figures announced last month’s inflation figure. It was 73 and a half percent. They even added a half to increase credibility meaning they measure inflation with a jeweler’s scale that is so sensitive that it is 73.5. It seems that there are two people in the country of 84 million people who do not know about the prices on the street: one, Mr. Erdogan, the other Mr. Bahçeli.
