Life in Bodrum Is Sounding the Alarm

Despite being one of Turkey’s most admired destinations, living in Bodrum is becoming increasingly difficult for its residents. A recent report titled “The Bodrum Cost of Living and Housing Reality”, published by the Muğla Planning Agency (MUPA), reveals a striking contradiction: one out of every three people living in Bodrum wants to leave the district due to rising housing costs.

Housing Costs Push Residents Away

According to the report, shared under the headline “Life in Bodrum Is Sounding the Alarm”, high housing expenses are now a decisive factor driving people out of the city. The findings show that 23.7% of participants are considering moving to another city, while 10.8% are thinking about relocating to another district, primarily because housing has become unaffordable.

Nearly Half of Bodrum Residents Struggle to Make Ends Meet

Data drawn from the yet-to-be-published “Muğla Multiple Vulnerabilities Research Report” paints an even more concerning picture. Forty-six percent of Bodrum residents say they are struggling with basic living expenses. An overwhelming 86.1% of respondents report that food prices have seen the highest increase in household spending over the past decade.

As a result, access to nutritious food has become a serious issue. Nearly one-third of Bodrum’s population cannot consistently afford healthy and nourishing food. While 33.8% say they struggle to access such food, 38.3% report occasional difficulty, and only 27.9% say they never face this problem.

Rent Consumes Half of Some Incomes

Although half of Bodrum’s households are homeowners, the situation is particularly harsh for renters. More than one in five tenants (22.6%) say they spend half of their monthly income on rent, leaving little room for other essential expenses.

A Lifestyle Under Pressure

The report makes it clear that rising housing and living costs are no longer just economic statistics but a direct threat to daily life in Bodrum. What was once seen as an enviable place to live is now pushing many of its long-term residents to consider leaving in search of more affordable alternatives.
