Borsa Istanbul Continued Its Rise in 2024: A 6-Year Long Uptrend

Borsa Istanbul maintained its upward trend in 2024. The BIST 100 index finished the year with a 31.60% increase, continuing its growth since 2019. After a decline in 2018, the stock market has been consistently gaining year after year since 2019. In 2019, it increased by 25%, in 2020 by 29%, in 2021 by 26%, in 2022 by 197%, and in 2023 by 36%. The year 2024 added a further 31.60% to this upward momentum.

The BIST 100 index also set new historical highs, reaching 11,252.11 points. Throughout the year, it saw positive performance in 7 months (January, February, April, May, June, November, and December), while it ended 5 months (March, July, August, September, and October) with losses. This fluctuating performance became a notable feature of Borsa Istanbul’s 2024 journey.

Top Gaining and Losing Sectors

In 2024, the sectors that saw the highest gains on Borsa Istanbul were insurance, communication, and banking. The banking index rose by approximately 67% over the year, while the industrial sector gained 13.20%. On the other hand, the only sector index to experience a decline was the sports sector.

Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and Investor Performance

Throughout 2024, 34 IPOs were carried out on Borsa Istanbul, with the IPO index rising by 17% over the year. This provided investors with significant growth opportunities.

Top Gaining and Losing Stocks

The stock with the highest gain in 2024 was Ufuk Yatırım (UFUK), which surged by 549.50%. The biggest loss was experienced by Peker GYO (PEKGY), with a 83.04% decrease. Among the stocks included in the BIST 100 index, the top three gainers were: Tav Havalimanları (TAVHL) with a 154.88% increase, MLP Sağlık (MPARK) with 135.40%, and Enerya Enerji (ENERY) with 129.24%. On the other hand, the stocks that saw the most significant losses included PEKGY, Beşiktaş (BJKAS) with a 51.02% decrease, and Hektaş (HEKTS) with a 46.44% drop.

Companies with the Highest Market Value

The most traded stocks in 2024 were Turkish Airlines (THYAO), Ereğli (EREGL), and İş Bankası (ISCTR). At the end of 2024, the total market value of the BIST 100 was 8 trillion 554 billion 998 million TL. Among the companies in the index, the one with the highest market value in Turkey was Garanti BBVA (GARAN) at 522 billion 480 million TL. It was followed by Koç Holding (KCHOL) with 452 billion 911 million TL, and Turkish Airlines (THYAO) with 387 billion 780 million TL in market value.
