Breaking News: Court Rules “Absolute Nullity” in CHP Congress Case, Kılıçdaroğlu to Retake Leadership
A major political development has emerged in Turkey after a court ruling regarding the main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP).
The legal case challenging the validity of the CHP congress where Özgür Özel was elected party leader in 2023 resulted in what Turkish legal terminology describes as a “mutlak butlan” — or “absolute nullity” — decision.
According to the ruling, the congresses in question were deemed legally invalid, and the court decided that former CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and his administration should officially retake control of the party.

The case involved requests for the cancellation of both the CHP’s 38th Ordinary Congress and the 21st Extraordinary Congress.
The decision was issued by the 36th Civil Chamber of the Ankara Regional Court of Justice. Reports stated that the ruling was made with precautionary measures attached, increasing its immediate political impact.
The court also ruled on changes regarding the CHP Istanbul provincial organization. The appointment of Gürsel Tekin as trustee was reportedly terminated following the decision.
In addition, the court appointed Gülsüm Hale Özcömert Coşkun to the CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairmanship.
Kılıçdaroğlu Makes First Statement
Following the ruling, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu made his first public comments to Turkish media, saying:
“May the absolute nullity decision be beneficial for Turkey and CHP.”
