Breaking: Prosecutor’s Office requests prison sentence from 2 yrs 8 months to 7 yrs 4 months and political ban for Ekrem İmamoğlu

A criminal indictment has been prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Mayor of Istanbul, following remarks he made at a panel. İmamoğlu is accused of targeting Istanbul’s Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek and his family, which has led to charges of “targeting those involved in counter-terrorism,” “insult,” and “threatening.” The prosecutor’s office has requested a prison sentence ranging from 2 years and 8 months to 7 years and 4 months, as well as a political ban for İmamoğlu.

The charges stem from statements İmamoğlu made that allegedly insulted and threatened Gürlek, who has been involved in counter-terrorism work and has been targeted by terrorist organizations in the past. The indictment suggests that İmamoğlu’s public comments, which were seen as diminishing and derogatory, went beyond freedom of expression, causing harm to the reputation of Gürlek.

The prosecutor’s office also requested the application of Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code, which would prevent İmamoğlu from holding any public office if convicted.

The case has been sent to a heavy criminal court for further review.
