Warning issued by earthquake expert regarding recent seismic activity in Aegean Sea

Prominent seismologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür issued a warning regarding the recent earthquakes in the Aegean Sea. He mentioned that there had been numerous earthquakes in the region, with nearly 500 occurring so far. While the outcome remains uncertain, he highlighted that if a significant fault rupture occurred, it could impact Turkey’s borders, specifically the coastal areas from Aydın to Muğla. This could lead to a tsunami and cause destruction in structures that are not well-built.

Görür also pointed out that while the earthquakes were happening in a “quake storm” pattern, they were not related to volcanic activity. He emphasized that the cause of these earthquakes was tectonic plate movements, especially involving the African plate subducting under the Anatolian plate. Some scientists have speculated volcanic activity, but Görür believes this is unlikely.

He also praised the response of the Greek authorities, noting that they had quickly taken action to ensure the safety of their people. He called for similar precautions and attention from local and central authorities in Turkey, especially along the southern coastline, as the earthquake activity continues.

Görür also mentioned that while it was unclear how long this would last, the “earthquake storm” could eventually subside and might not lead to a major disaster. However, he warned that inadequate preparation in the region could lead to serious damage if a large earthquake were to occur.
