Court decides to continue detention of businessman and activist Kavala

Gezi case in which businessman Osman Kavala, detained for 4 years, is also tried, was heard at the Istanbul Courthouse today. Kavala had announced that he would not attend the hearings after President Erdogan of the AKP targeted him directly

In accordance with the prosecutor’s request, the court decided by a majority vote to continue Kavala’s detention. The member judge who voted for Kavala to be released emphasized that after this stage, such possibilities as evidence blackout had disappeared and that his detention would not be right. The trial will resume on January 17.

If Kavala is not released in accordance with the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) until this session, the Committee is expected to begin the sanctions procedure against Turkey.
