Dams in Turkey emptied after autumn without precipitation

The last autumn without precipitation has increased the risk of drought in many regions. While the cumulative precipitation average in Turkey decreased by 46.3 percent, the water level in the dams also decreased. The dam occupancy rate in Istanbul, which was 42.6 percent on November 18 last year, was 36.2 percent in the same period this year. It was determined that Istanbul had 4.2 months of water left.

According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI); Cumulative precipitation average in Turkey between October 1 and November 18 decreased by 46.3 percent compared to the average of many years.

The decrease in precipitation also led to a decrease in the water level in the dams. While the water level in the dams in Istanbul, Bursa and Izmir decreased significantly, only the dams in Ankara experienced an increase. The occupancy rate at the dams in Istanbul, which was 42.6 percent on November 18 last year, was recorded as 36.2 percent in the same period this year. It has been determined that there is 4.2 months of water in Istanbul dams. In Izmir, while the occupancy rate of the dams was 21.6 percent on November 18 last year, it was determined that it was 19 percent in the same period this year and that 17.1 months of water remained.
